Do I need to pay estimated taxes for my weekend side hustle?

I just started driving for Uber on weekends to pay off some debt. I expect to make about $5,000 this year from it. Do I need to file quarterly estimated taxes, or can I just pay it all when I file in April?

I drive for DoorDash and usually I just increase the withholding on my main W-2 job so I don't have to bother with quarterly payments. It's way easier.

[Verified Expert Answer] If you expect to owe more than $1,000 in taxes when you file your return, the IRS requires you to pay estimated quarterly taxes. However, as the other user mentioned, a great workaround is simply updating your W-4 at your W-2 job to withhold more money each paycheck to cover the side hustle taxes.
